Zach Sobiech is a 17 year old diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that takes the lives of a large percentage of its childhood victims. Given only months to live, Zach turned to music to say goodbye to those he loved. Even in the face of death, Zach continues to inspire those around him, showing through his daily actions that the secret to life is to live in the service of others and simply make people happy.

Zach turned 18 years old today and continues his fight against cancer with a smile that can change the world. Happy Birthday Zach! You are always in our thoughts!

When Zach passed on May 20th, this video went viral again. I put off watching it, but I finally broke down this morning. I cried the whole way through, yet his story is far more uplifting than it is depressing. If you haven’t seen it already, set aside 20 minutes and prepare for a roller coaster of emotions.

This, this is the reason that majority of the community hate us, can’t you just be gay without fitting into the stereotypes or without your mother enabling you? Blue, green, yellow, grey, black, red, brown, orange - there are so many other colours you could wear, you wear pink. I can’t walk down the street holding my boyfriends hand because the rest of you set these images into the public’s mind of what being gay is “pink, fairy, glitter, faggots”… Which I MUST be because I’m gay. Not every person that is considered gorgeous by one or a few or many or millions of people is going to be considered even remotely good looking by everyone. That was worded very awkwardly. The point is that gorgeous to one person is average or not at all appealing to someone else.

But do you ever see someone and it’s like a kick to the chest, and your stomach actually hurts a little bit with how stunningly gorgeous that person is? Stunning. Literally. They’re so pleasing to look at through your eyes that you are, by definition, momentarily stunned by them. And you have no idea whether or not they’re aware of their gorgeousness, and even if they have some idea, because how can someone be that beautiful and not have had at least one person try to put it into words for them, you’re not entirely convinced that they can actually comprehend just how goddamn brain-addlingly gorgeous they are.

This kick to the chest brain addlement doesn’t happen very often to me at all. I very rarely have to jumpstart my brain, or pretend that I meant to trip over nothing, or turn to share a look with whomever I’m with like “holy crap did you see that person what the hell?”, or remind myself to pick my jaw up off the floor, or wonder what that sound that just came out of my mouth was (a strange combination of vowels and “whaaaaaat?” and maybe a sharp inhalation).

Every now and then, though… Bam. Kick straight to the chest. And there’s this immediate shyness that happens. And if it were an acceptable thing to do, I would probably just sit there and study their face and their eyes. Just sort of take it all in and appreciate it. Them.

I’ve always been a bit bummed out about the part of life where it’s not really acceptable to just start are people. I’m the sort of person who likes to be able to look at things that I find interesting. I’ve long wanted to be able to sit someone down, park myself across from them (very close), and stare at their irises, and their eyebrows, and the bridge of their nose, and their chin, and their lips, and their jaw, and their everything. Just look and notice and see. And try to keep my hands to myself. Because I am someone who needs to be able to touch something in order to understand it, to feel like I’ve actually seen it.

I’m not sure where I was going with this, but rambling is another side effect of encountering such gorgeousness.

(In case it isn’t clear, I saw a super gorgeous person today, and it made me think of some of the other times I’ve been knocked sort of senseless. It’s a goofy feeling. It makes me wish I had better words. If I were less self-conscious or whatever it is that I am that makes me walk past people instead of initiating something, I would probably go around telling people how amazing they are or how beautiful they are or how much I wish I could have a conversation with them. About anything. And then running off to catch up to that person who just walked by with awesome shoes on their feet that need high fiving about.

I actually do that when I’m drunk or hopped up on sugar. I’m a pretty blunt, to the point individual in general, but I’ll just tell someone that I like their suspenders. And I think that a lot of the time people think I’m being sarcastic, because who positively comments on a handkerchief in someone’s pocket in a genuine manner? And also I’m a very sarcastic person who has trouble inflecting from time to time. It’s unfortunate that people are more used to other people being critical of them than they are used to people being completely, innocently, unabashedly enthusiastic about liking something about them or their appearance.)

Today’s weird argument against marriage equality is brought to you by Minnesota resident Mike Frey, who seems to be assured that (straight) women’s private parts have the magical ability to block HIV with a cellular tissue-based “barrier.” Bathing in ignorance before the State House’s legislative committee, Frey further goes on to single out sodomy as the cause of AIDS and warns of other possible diseases that could be spread by gay people.

This actually made me laugh out loud. Aside from iffy science, I think this man is under the impression that homosexuals take vows of celibacy for life if they can’t be legally married in their home state. Uhhh… sure.

Plus, the idea that making sex between men illegal because the health risks would be a “financial burden on the people of Minnesota to be able to support all the diseases that come out of this” is ridiculous because that logic could be used to ban ALL sex in order to lower the cost of having to pay for ANY medication for STDs at all. So where do you draw the line? Right where it supports your preexisting ideas of morality. Duh!

Oh, and way to forget about lesbians. They still have that HIV-blocking vagina barrier, right?! Three cheers for scissoring!
